Introducing the Inspired-Outdoors E-Locker: Real Traction, Finally Done Right for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

  • by

There’s a moment every Sprinter owner who ventures off the tarmac knows all too well. You’re on a soft two-track, a muddy farm road, or a sandy beach approach. One rear wheel finds a slick patch or lifts ever so slightly on uneven ground, and suddenly your van isn’t going anywhere. The free wheel spins uselessly while the wheel with grip just sits there, doing nothing. That’s the open differential doing exactly what it was designed to do, and exactly what you don’t want it to do when traction gets scarce.

Today, we’re thrilled to announce our answer to that problem, and a milestone for our company. The Inspired-Outdoors E-Locker is here: an electronic selectable locking differential developed in-house, designed specifically for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and supplied as a complete kit with HTV ring and pinion gear sets in your choice of ratios.

This isn’t an adapted locker from another platform. It isn’t a compromise. It’s a ground-up solution for the Sprinter, built by people who use these vans the way you do.

Why the Sprinter Deserved Better

The Sprinter has quietly become one of the most capable adventure platforms in the world. It hauls our camper conversions into the mountains, carries tradespeople down rutted access roads, tows trailers across farms and job sites, and forms the backbone of countless overland builds. But for all its strengths, the Sprinter has always had a traction Achilles’ heel: the factory open rear differential.

An open diff sends engine torque down the path of least resistance. On dry tarmac, that’s fine, it’s what lets you corner smoothly without driveline wind-up. But the moment one rear wheel loses grip, the open diff obediently sends the power to that spinning wheel. The wheel with traction, the one that could actually move you forward, receives next to nothing. Traction control systems can help by braking the spinning wheel, but they’re reactive, they generate heat, and in deep sand or mud they often simply give up.

The proper solution has been known for decades: a locking differential. Lock the two rear axle shafts together so both wheels turn at the same speed, no matter what, and suddenly a single patch of grip under either tyre is enough to keep you moving. The difference isn’t subtle. It’s the difference between driving out and digging out.

The problem? Until now, Sprinter owners wanting a selectable locker have had very limited options, and the dominant solution required bolting an entire compressed-air system onto the van just to make the locker work.

Going Electric: A Simpler, Smarter Locker

The Inspired-Outdoors E-Locker takes a fundamentally simpler approach. Instead of compressed air, our locker engages electromagnetically. Flick the illuminated dash switch, and an electromagnetic actuator inside the differential locks both axle shafts together, 100% locked, instantly, mechanically. Flick it off, and the differential returns to fully open operation with completely standard on-road manners.

Why does electric actuation matter so much? Consider what an air-operated locker actually demands of you. You need the locker itself, yes, but you also need an onboard air compressor, a place to mount it, wiring to power it, an air-line routed the full length of the van to the differential, solenoids to control the air, and rotating air seals inside the diff housing to deliver that pressure to a spinning carrier. Every one of those components costs money. Every one adds installation time. And every one is a potential point of failure: a chafed air-line under the van, a leaking seal inside the diff, a compressor that packs up after years of vibration. When an air system loses pressure, you lose your locker, usually at the worst possible moment, in the worst possible place.

Our E-Locker eliminates that entire chain. The complete actuation system is a pre-terminated, loom-protected wiring harness and a dash-mounted switch. There’s nothing to plumb, nothing to pressurise, nothing to leak. Twelve volts and a switch, that’s the whole story. The result is a locker that costs less as a total system, installs faster and cleaner, and has dramatically fewer things that can go wrong between your finger and your traction.

Designed for the Sprinter, 906 and 907

We didn’t adapt this locker from another vehicle and hope for the best. The Inspired-Outdoors E-Locker was engineered from the outset around the standard Sprinter rear axle, with direct fitment for both the 906-platform vans (2006‚Äì2018), and the current 907 platform (2019 onwards).  If you’re running a standard Sprinter rear axle, this kit is built for it.

That development focus matters more on the Sprinter than on most vehicles, because of a quirk many owners don’t discover until they’re deep into a build: the factory Sprinter differential uses a ring gear that is welded to the carrier. It can’t be unbolted and transferred to a new differential the way it can on most 4x4s. Any carrier replacement, locker or otherwise, requires a new ring and pinion set.

Rather than leaving you to source gears separately and hope everything plays nicely together, we’ve made the gearing part of the package.

A Complete Kit, Including HTV Ring & Pinion

Every Inspired-Outdoors E-Locker ships as a genuinely complete kit. Inside the box you’ll find the E-Locker differential unit itself, a precision-matched HTV ring and pinion gear set, the full wiring harness, the illuminated dash switch, and the installation hardware to bring it all together.

We chose HTV Gears for a reason. Their crown wheel and pinion sets for the Sprinter platform are precision-manufactured, proven in demanding commercial and off-road service around the world, and trusted by the industry, they’re the same gear sets specified by other major locker manufacturers for Sprinter applications. When your ring and pinion is transmitting every newton-metre your van produces, gear quality isn’t where you compromise.

And because a new ring and pinion is required anyway, the kit turns a necessity into an opportunity: you get to choose your final drive ratio. We offer the HTV gear sets in five ratios 3.69, 3.92, 4.18, 4.36, and 4.72. Running larger all-terrain tyres that have effectively raised your gearing? Step down a ratio and get your acceleration and engine braking back. Built a heavy camper that’s always working the drivetrain hard? A shorter ratio like the 4.36 or 4.72 restores effortless pulling power. Want to keep everything exactly as Mercedes intended? Simply match your factory ratio. If you’re not sure what’s right for your van, weight, and tyre size, get in touch, we’ll talk you through it.

On the Road, Nothing Changes. Off the Road, Everything Does.

One of the best things about a selectable locker is what it doesn’t do. Disengaged, the Inspired-Outdoors E-Locker behaves exactly like a factory open differential. No clunking around car parks, no tyre scrub in tight turns, no change to your van’s daily manners, towing stability, or highway refinement. Your Sprinter drives like a Sprinter.

Then the surface turns loose. Sand, mud, snow, wet grass, off-camber tracks, a steep loose climb to that perfect campsite. Press the switch, and both rear wheels are mechanically locked together. Momentum that used to disappear into a spinning wheel now goes straight to the ground. Obstacles that previously meant reversing out, airing down, or reaching for the recovery boards become simply… driving.

For 4×4 Sand all-wheel drive Sprinters, a rear locker transforms genuine off-road ability. For the thousands of two-wheel-drive Sprinters out there, the effect is arguably even more dramatic, a locked rear axle gives a 2WD van capability that routinely surprises owners of far more expensive machinery.

Built by Inspired-Outdoors, Backed by Inspired-Outdoors

This launch is special to us. The E-Locker is a product we developed ourselves, because we live with these vans and we were no longer willing to accept the compromises of the existing options. It has been designed, prototyped, tested, and refined with one goal: dependable, on-demand traction for the Sprinter platform, without the cost and complexity of compressed air.

A note on fitting: differential installation involves setting gear mesh pattern, backlash, and preload, so we recommend installation at our Tongaat, KZN located workshop, or a qualified driveline specialist. Get it set up properly once, and it will serve you for the life of the van.
